CDM Principal Designer
Principal Designer Resource for Project
Our client are operating a very large construction site that has multiple separate CDM projects. The projects are involved in the construction of a very large Transmission Substation comprising of OHL, HVDC convertor stations and AC Transmission infrastructure.
There is the requirement for an experienced Principal Designer to be the Principal Designer for one of the Projects on the site (2x major Converter Stations)
The experienced resource will also provide a Point of Interface from all the Principal Designers associated with the projects. This will involve regular interactions with the Principal Designers, ensuring sufficient information is being exchanged.
Work closely with the CDM Manager, Engineers and Project Managers, and Principal Designers from other projects on the Hub.
The following are the tasks that the resource will undertake:
The role will also involve chairing regular Principal Designer meetings and site-specific hazard workshops, proactively managing actions, supporting Management of Change during construction, and leading the development and acceptance of Health and Safety Files. This includes recording residual design risks, providing monthly KPI reports, working closely with NEC site supervisors to confirm construction aligns with the accepted design, and escalating any site issues to the CDM Manager where further support is needed.

The following are the tasks that the resource will undertake:
- Review / familiarize with existing business CDM procedures, especially any related to the role of Principal Designer
- Take ownership of Principal Designer related procedures and documentation
- Ensure all (Internal and External) Designers are complying with their duties under CDM for the Convertor Stations.
- Initiate regular meetings with Converter Stations Client and Principal Contractor.
- Chair regular Principal Designer meetings for Convertor Stations
- Point of Interface with all other Principal Designers on one of the sites
- Interfaces – Point of Interface of all Principal Designers. Ensure all of the PD’s are exchanging information appropriately.
- Assist Client in ensuring acceptable Temporary works design process
- Assist Client on Pre Construction Information development and Construction Phase Plan review.
- Chair site specific HAZARD workshops and proactively work with people to close actions.
- Manage or assist with Management of Change (MoC) during construction phase.
- Take the lead on Health and Safety File development and acceptance for Convertor stations. (Not to be left to the end)
- Record all relevant residual risks and other information from design phase that needs to be detailed in the relevant Health and Safety File(s).
- Monthly report with KPIs.
- Later on in Project = work closely with NEC site supervisors to ensure construction is as per the accepted design.
- Escalate / Report any site issues to CDM Manager for assistance
