Iberdrola has successfully completed the 37MW Montechoro 1 and 2 solar plants in the Algarve region of southern Portugal, and these facilities are now supplying power to the national grid.

The projects, secured by Iberdrola in a 2019 auction, boast an annual production capacity of 56.84GWh.

Featuring over 64,554 bifacial panels, these solar plants can power approximately 19,000 households while preventing the emission of over 21 million tonnes of CO2 annually. The total investment for these projects was €30 million, creating around 200 jobs in the area and boosting the local economy through the engagement of local suppliers for grid connection and substation construction.

Alejandra Reyna, managing director of Iberdrola Renewables Portugal, remarked, “The addition of these photovoltaic plants is a significant step towards decarbonizing the economy. It enhances Portugal's renewable energy capacity and supports socio-economic growth, aligning with both national and global emission reduction goals and energy autonomy initiatives.”

The Spanish company emphasized its dedication to biodiversity conservation by implementing various environmental protection measures during the construction of these plants.

Iberdrola reiterated its ongoing commitment to expanding its green energy portfolio in Portugal, which will aid in the energy transition, bolster energy security and competitiveness, and create sustainable jobs across the value chain.
