Project Engineer
Role Purpose
Working alongside the Project Manager / Project Director and wider delivery team, this role is accountable for supporting the successful end‑to‑end execution of projects - including planning, design coordination, delivery, progress monitoring, commissioning, and final handover.
You will translate project requirements and design information into practical delivery solutions, brief the delivery team, and oversee execution on site. The role involves leading and supporting the workforce, ensuring work meets project expectations for safety, quality, schedule, and cost.
Direct reports may include Site Engineers, Assistant Engineers, Apprentices, and functional leads (e.g., Quality, Procurement, Design).

Key Responsibilities include:

Lead and contribute to project meetings and formal reviews.
-
Maintain accurate site and project records (e.g., diaries, progress logs).
-
Prepare internal and external reports and manage stakeholder communications.
-
Maintain awareness of digital project tools and documentation systems.
-
Ensure reporting outputs enable sound technical and commercial decision making.
-
Help determine work package structuring and interfaces to support coordinated delivery.
-
Interpret and convert technical designs into practical plans for site implementation.
-
Identify plant, equipment, and resource requirements.
-
Champion a Zero Harm culture and remain up to date with relevant legislation.
-
Protect the safety and welfare of employees, subcontractors, and the public.
-
Conduct safety tours, inspections, and support safety initiatives.

Lead or support accident/incident investigations and ensure close‑out actions.
-
Prepare and review RAMS, including acceptance of subcontractor submissions.
-
Manage safety documentation, audits, and workforce competence.
-
Support project leadership in structured reviews and updates to risk registers.
-
Escalate issues beyond delegated authority promptly.
-
Manage subcontractor performance, attendance, progress, and instruction.
-
Support development and maintenance of procurement plans.
-
Ensure materials, resources, and supply chain activities align with programme needs.

Monitor performance against KPIs and overall project quality objectives.
-
Participate in audits and lead corrective actions where required.

Contribute to continuous improvement activities and workshops.
-
Assist in developing and maintaining resource‑loaded schedules.
-
Promote and adopt production controls and short‑interval planning techniques.
-
Monitor progress and align operational milestones with master schedules.
-
Ensure cost control measures are followed and resources used efficiently.
-
Identify opportunities for cost recovery and manage commercial change processes.
-
Support CE assessment and implementation.
-
Understand contractual obligations and their commercial implications.
-
Manage requests for plant and material procurement.
-
Comply with digital standards and promote effective use of digital tools.

Ensure the team receives appropriate digital training and coaching.
-
Promote reliable digital data capture and reporting.
-
Support development of resource allocation plans and raise personnel requests.
-
Coordinate with project functions and support training and upskilling of colleagues.
-
Help set people to work safely and effectively.

Strengthen team capability through coaching, mentoring, and performance management.

Contribute to team development plans and succession planning.

Experience & Qualifications

Background in engineering or construction project delivery.
-
Experience implementing safe systems of work and managing change.
-
Knowledge of risk management and commercial processes.
-
Competent user of Microsoft 365 and digital project tools.
-
Working towards or holding relevant qualifications (e.g., engineering degree, APM PFQ/PMQ).
-
CSCS and SMSTS (or equivalent) desirable.
