SKYBORN SUBMITS PERMIT FOR 3GW SWEDISH PROJECT

Industry News

Skyborn Sweden has submitted a permit application to the Swedish government and the Land and Environment Court to build the 3000MW Polargrund Offshore wind farm.

Situated 35 kilometers off the coast, south of Kalix and Haparanda, Polargrund Offshore (pictured) is projected to produce up to 10TWh of fossil-free electricity once completed.

This renewable energy will be sufficient to supply over 7% of Sweden's current electricity consumption. It will play a crucial role in addressing the rising demand from Norrbotten's rapidly growing industries, which are shifting towards cleaner operations.

Some estimates predict an extraordinary 800% increase in the region's power requirements.

Niclas Broman, CEO of Skyborn Sweden, stated: "Polargrund Offshore is a pivotal project for supporting the extensive development plans of the business sector in Norrbotten and aiding Sweden's transition to net-zero emissions.

"As the developer of Sweden's northernmost offshore wind farm, we are dedicated to overcoming the unique challenges associated with constructing such a large-scale project in an arctic environment."

Sweden's overall electricity demand is expected to at least double in the coming decades.

This growth is primarily driven by the electrification of heavy industries nationwide. Access to clean, reliable electricity is crucial for these industries to meet their sustainability targets.

With Polargrund, Skyborn reinforces its commitment to a resilient Swedish energy system.

The company's Swedish portfolio now includes four offshore wind farms, with a combined potential annual output of approximately 40TWh.
