Google Partners with Shell Energy Europe to Power UK Operations with Renewables

Google has selected Shell Energy Europe to manage its renewable power supply in the UK, a major step in its ambition to operate entirely on clean energy by 2030.

The agreement will see Shell leverage its trading expertise, renewable portfolio, and battery storage capacity to balance Google’s energy demand. By storing excess renewable generation and discharging it when needed, Shell will help Google ensure a 24/7 clean power supply for its UK operations.

 


 

This announcement comes alongside the opening of Google’s new data centre in Waltham Cross, Hertfordshire, which will support increased demand for core services including Cloud, Gmail, Search, and Maps.

 

Accelerating the UK’s Clean Energy Transition

Google’s EMEA data centre energy director confirmed that UK operations are projected to run at or near 95% carbon-free energy (CFE) by 2026, with Shell playing a central role in closing the remaining hourly gap.

The collaboration will not only support Google’s net-zero targets but also contribute to wider grid stability and clean energy growth in the UK. The agreement builds on existing power purchase deals the companies signed in 2023 for offshore wind capacity in the Netherlands.
