Glassenbury Battery Project Secures £8.6m to Boost UK Energy Storage Capacity

Boost UK Storage Capacity

The UK’s energy storage sector continues to gather pace, with the news that Gresham House Energy Storage Fund (GRID) has secured £8.6 million to significantly expand its Glassenbury Battery Storage project in Kent.

The investment will upgrade the site’s capacity from 38MWh to 110MWh, increasing its ability to support the grid with clean, flexible power. This follows growing recognition of battery storage as a key enabler of the UK’s transition to net zero—balancing intermittent generation from renewables like wind and solar.

The Glassenbury site, which includes two projects (Glassenbury A and B), will now move forward with construction, set to begin in July 2024 and complete by the end of 2025. GRID has partnered with UAB E Energy Invest (EEI), who now hold a 35% stake in the project, while GRID retains 65%.

From LSP Renewables’ perspective, this is more than a funding announcement—it’s a clear indicator that investment appetite in battery storage is growing, and the sector is scaling up to meet rising demand for grid flexibility.

As more projects like this move into construction and operation, the need for experienced professionals in engineering, development, operations, and asset management is increasing rapidly.
