UK Renewables Hit New Record
UK Renewable Energy Approvals Hit Record 16GW in Q2 2025
Government figures have revealed a record 16GW of new renewable energy capacity won planning approval in the UK during the second quarter of 2025. The figures represent a 195% increase on the same period last year, highlighting growing momentum in the UK’s clean energy transition.
Major projects approved
The approvals cover 323 projects across solar, wind and energy storage. A standout decision came from Scotland, where SSE’s 4.1GW Berwick Bank offshore wind farm secured consent. This project is set to become one of the largest offshore wind farms in Europe, further cementing the UK’s position as a leader in offshore wind development.
Strong growth in energy storage
Battery storage also saw significant progress. Between April and June 2025, over 100 planning applications were submitted, representing a combined 8.4GW of storage capacity. That is more than double the total from the same quarter in 2024.
Over the 12 months to June, developers filed applications for 30GW of storage across 400 projects. This trajectory is particularly important as the government estimates that the UK will require 23 to 27GW of storage by 2030, up from just 6GW today.
Policy backdrop
The approvals align with the Labour government’s manifesto pledge to deliver 95% carbon-free electricity by 2030. With record levels of renewable projects in the pipeline, supported by a clear policy direction, the UK is accelerating its shift away from fossil fuels towards a resilient, low-carbon power system.
What this means for the industry
