Trump Signs Executive Order to Eliminate Wind and Solar Subsidies

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order to eliminate federal subsidies for wind and solar energy, intensifying the policy shift away from renewables and toward conventional power sources.
The order, issued on 7 July, directs the US Treasury to terminate clean electricity production and investment tax credits for renewable energy facilities. It also mandates the implementation of stricter Foreign Entity of Concern restrictions as outlined in the "One Big Beautiful Bill Act."
Additionally, the Department of the Interior has been instructed to revise regulations to remove preferential treatment for wind and solar compared to what the order describes as “reliable, dispatchable energy sources.”
President Trump stated the move is intended to “unleash American energy,” criticising renewable technologies as “expensive and unreliable,” and warning that ongoing reliance on green subsidies poses risks to national security and economic stability. He pointed to fossil fuels, nuclear power, and emerging energy technologies as the path to achieving “energy dominance.”
The executive order signals a broader rollback of federal support mechanisms for renewable energy development in the United States. Under the terms of the One Big Beautiful Bill Act, renewable energy projects that have not begun construction by the end of 2026 will no longer be eligible for tax credits.
This development follows a series of moves by the current administration to curtail renewable energy initiatives, including halts to offshore wind leasing and permitting, and tariffs on key components for clean energy infrastructure.
LSP Renewables continues to monitor policy developments in key markets, including the US, that may impact the global renewables supply chain and workforce planning landscape.
