RWE Powers Up First UK Solar Farm at Langford, Devon

RWE has energised its first operational solar farm in the UK, with the 35MW Langford Solar Farm in Devon now generating clean electricity. This major milestone supports the company’s wider push to scale renewable capacity across England.

The Langford site is expected to generate around 49,500MWh of green electricity each year—enough to power more than 15,000 typical UK homes—while cutting over 25,000 tonnes of CO₂ emissions annually, equivalent to removing 15,500 cars from the road.

Hybrid Solar + Battery Project

Langford Solar Farm will soon be joined by a co-located 35MW battery energy storage system, currently under construction and due to complete in the coming weeks. The integrated hybrid setup is designed to maximise grid efficiency and stability, making it a key asset in the UK’s clean energy infrastructure.

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, said:
“The energisation of Langford Solar Farm marks an important step for RWE’s solar ambitions in the UK, and is a testament to the dedication, expertise, and passion of our team. This achievement reinforces our commitment to supporting the energy transition, with solar power playing a pivotal role in delivering secure, sustainable, and affordable energy for the future.”

Langford is part of a broader RWE programme targeting nearly 530MW of solar and 105MW of battery capacity across 11 sites in England. It also aligns with the UK government’s new Solar Roadmap, which sets a target of up to 47GW of installed capacity by 2030 under the Clean Power Action Plan.

Biodiversity and Community Benefits

Beyond clean power, Langford delivers significant biodiversity and local economic benefits:

  • 50% net gain in habitat and 10% increase in hedgerows

  • Wildlife corridors, nesting boxes, and enhanced grasslands

  • £110,000 annual business rates contribution

  • £40,000 community grant to Cullompton Town Council for rooftop solar and sustainability initiatives

  • Up to 80 jobs supported during construction

Langford Solar Farm is the first of several UK projects expected to go live this year, as RWE works toward delivering up to 500MW of new UK solar capacity by the end of 2025.
