RWE, MICROSOFT SIGN TEXAS WIND PPA's

Industry News

RWE has entered into two power purchase agreements (PPAs) with Microsoft, securing supply from two wind farms in Texas with a combined capacity of 446MW.

These 15-year PPAs will help Microsoft achieve its goal of covering 100% of its electricity consumption with renewable energy by 2025.

As a result of these agreements, RWE has commenced construction on the 243MW Peyton Creek 2 wind farm and decided to move forward with the Lane City project.
Andrew Flanagan, CEO of RWE Clean Energy, expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration: “We are excited to be working with Microsoft to provide the clean electricity they need to achieve their sustainability goals.

“Together, we’re united in our efforts to deliver a clean energy future. As a growing green business, we are committed to driving our renewable targets, supporting local communities to grow sustainably.”

For the construction of Peyton Creek 2, RWE has partnered with Vestas, Wanzek Construction, and RES.

RWE will utilize the V163 4.5MW turbines from Vestas North America and has contracted Wanzek and RES to oversee construction at Peyton Creek 2 and Lane City.

Peyton Creek 2 is situated near RWE’s existing Peyton Creek 1 wind farm in Bay City, Texas, which has been operational since March 2020.

The construction of the Lane City project is set to begin this summer, with a planned capacity of 203MW.

During construction, both Peyton Creek 2 and Lane City are anticipated to create between 250-300 jobs each and provide 20 full-time positions once operational.

Moreover, Peyton Creek 2 will contribute approximately $300 million to the local tax base in Matagorda County, while Lane City will add $300 million to the tax base in Wharton County.
