On the 17th January, BOEM (US Bureau of Ocean Energy Management) approved the construction and operation plan (COP) for SouthCoast Wind offshore project.
The 2.4GW project will include up to 141 wind turbines, and up to 5 offshore substation platforms, located at a maximum of 143 positions with up to 8 offshore export cables potentially making landfall in Brayton Point, Falmouth.
The lease area for SouthCoast wind was secured back in 2018 was established by both Shell New Energies US LLC and Ocean Winds North America. In March 2024 Shell sold their 50 percent share to Ocean Winds.
The originally proposed project included a further 6 wind turbine positions in the northeastern portion of the Lease Area was declined due to potential impacts on foraging habitat and potential displacement of wildlife. However, after the removal of the six, the project has been approved an will be based about 26 nautical miles south of Martha’s Vineyard.
A great win for the US, heavily contributing to their further green energy targets.
