JAPAN AWARDS THREE PROJECTS IN OFFSHORE WIND AUCTION!

A combined capacity of over 1.4GW has been awarded by the Japanese government in the country’s second offshore wind auction. 

RWE Offshore Wind Japan Murakami-Tainai K.K. has been selected alongside Mitsui & Co., Ltd, and Osaka Gas Co., Ltd to deliver the first of three commercial scale offshore wind projects off the coast of Japan. RWE, Mitsui, and Osaka Gas have been appointed to develop, construct, and operate the 38 turbine, fixed bottom offshore wind farm, with a planned capacity of 684MW scheduled for a full commissioning date of June 2029. 

The Nagasaki Project, another 28 turbines combining 420MW, set to be based off the coast of Saikai City, has been awarded to Sumitomo and Tokyo Electrical Power Company (TEPCO) to develop the project ready for August 2029. 

And finally, the 315MW Akita Project off the coast of Akita City will be developed by  JERA, Itochu, Electric Power Development (J-Power) and Tohoku Electric Power. The project will consist of another 21 turbines that are set to begin generating electricity from June 2028. 

The three projects will make a significant contribution to the country’s renewable energy targets as well as its economic growth and environmental sustainability, making offshore wind a major energy source for Japan! A huge congratulations to all those appointed throughout the auction!
