Great British Energy Sets 2030 Target to Become Self-Financing

The UK government has set out clear targets for Great British Energy (GBE), confirming the state-owned company must deliver returns on its commercial activities by 2030 and have a plan in place to become self-financing by that date.

Profits generated by GBE will be reinvested into clean energy projects to provide long-term protection for billpayers and accelerate the deployment of homegrown renewable power.

Strategic Role in the Clean Power Mission

Energy secretary Ed Miliband outlined GBE’s mission, describing it as a new national champion designed to harness Britain’s natural resources and place working people, communities, and industries at the core of the clean energy transition.

GBE will act as a developer, investor, and owner of renewable energy projects, working alongside private developers, devolved governments, local authorities, and community groups. Its role is to increase public ownership in clean power while backing domestic supply chains and creating skilled jobs across the UK.

Current Investments and Future Plans

Great British Energy is already investing around £200m in renewable projects for schools, hospitals, and public buildings. Solar panels are now installed and helping to cut bills for essential services.

Looking ahead, GBE plans to invest £1bn in UK supply chains, unlocking further private sector investment and supporting thousands of jobs. The company has also committed to publishing a strategic plan within six months, outlining how it will:

  • Invest in both established and emerging clean energy technologies needed for Clean Power 2030

  • Strengthen UK renewable supply chains

  • Support local and community energy projects through a new Local Power Plan

A Boost for Renewable Careers

At LSP Renewables, we see this as a landmark opportunity for the UK’s energy workforce. GBE’s focus on supply chains, innovation, and community energy will create significant demand for professionals in project development, engineering, and operations. As investment accelerates, so too will the need for talent to deliver the clean power mission.
