EDF Renewables UK Signs 15-Year Solar Power Deal with Transport for London
EDF Renewables UK has signed a 15-year power purchase agreement (PPA) with Transport for London (TfL) to supply clean solar electricity from its Longfield Solar Farm in Essex.
Under the agreement, approximately 20% of the site’s output will be dedicated to powering London’s transport network. This marks a major milestone in the development of the Longfield project, which received planning approval in June 2023 and is now moving towards the construction phase.
The PPA is expected to deliver significant environmental benefits, with TfL estimating that the contract will help avoid over 28,000 tonnes of carbon emissions during its duration. This supports TfL’s broader goal to source 100% of its electricity from renewable sources by 2030.
Lilli Matson, chief safety, health and environment officer at TfL, said:
“This agreement enables EDF Renewables UK to invest in a brand new facility for clean electricity supply for our Tube network and GB’s grid. It is a significant step in our mission to make all our services powered this way by 2030.”
Mayor of London Sadiq Khan welcomed the move as part of London’s broader climate agenda, saying it would support the capital’s ambition to become a net zero carbon city by 2030 while reinforcing public transport as the greenest way to travel.
Matthieu Hue, CEO of EDF Renewables UK, added:
“This agreement is built upon our shared commitment to sustainability and investing in clean energy. We’re proud to support TfL in reducing emissions while contributing to the UK’s energy transition.”
TfL is one of the UK’s largest electricity users, consuming around 1.6 terawatt-hours (TWh) annually.
Commenting on the agreement, Energy Minister Michael Shanks said the project will not only strengthen the country’s energy security but also help create new green jobs.
