100MW BATTERY STORAGE PROJECT APPROVED IN SCOTLAND

Source - reNews - Green light for 100MW Scottish battery

UK-based energy storage developer Apatura has gained planning approval for a 100MW battery storage project in Tealing, near Dundee, on Scotland's east coast. This marks the company's fifth successful planning consent for a battery storage facility within the past year, furthering its ambition to enhance renewable energy support across Scotland.

The site spans 2.5 hectares in the countryside, positioned 6.7km north of Dundee and 1.8km southwest of Tealing village in Angus. The facility will consist of 52 lithium-ion battery units, each housed in steel containers, with a direct underground connection to the nearby Tealing substation.

Apatura's chief development officer, Andrew Philpott, highlighted the scale of the project: “With a 100MW capacity, our new Tealing development will be among the largest battery energy storage schemes in the UK. Once operational, it will significantly enhance grid security and stability, contributing to the UK's renewable energy transition and its commitment to a low-carbon economy.”

Environmental considerations have been integrated into the project, with the company planning to introduce native tree and wildflower planting to ensure a biodiversity net gain. The choice of location was strategic, with Philpott emphasizing the benefits of its proximity to the Tealing substation: “This makes the site ideal for energy storage, and the development will not only support renewable energy but also provide a considerable economic boost to the local community. Jobs will be created during the construction, operational, and decommissioning phases, alongside indirect employment opportunities in the supply chain and maintenance sectors.”

The project has received approval from Scottish Ministers, with Angus Council expressing no objections. The council's letter noted that the development would align with government energy goals and is in accordance with policies outlined in the Angus Local Development Plan and National Planning Framework 4, which focuses on land development and use.

Once completed, the facility will play a crucial role in bolstering the UK's energy grid while supporting the country's shift towards sustainable energy sources.
