Senior Electrical Engineer

Senior Electrical Engineer The Senior Electrical Engineer will play a vital role in the development and delivery of the substation packages for large transmission connected Development Consent Order (DCO) projects. Reporting to the Electrical Engineering Manager the Senior Electrical Engineer will be embedded in the DCO project team and accountable for delivery of the Electrical Engineering activities associated with the Substation package but would also offer Electrical Engineering support to the Solar, Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and Electrical Balance of Plant packages from concept design through to delivery. The Senior Electrical Engineer shall deliver electrical services in the Engineering team, CTO, and wider business, demonstrating an ability to add value to opportunities in a highly competitive and changing marketplace while ensuring appropriate engineering and quality standards are maintained. Key Responsibilities Leading by example and proactively maintaining the highest level of standards to comply with all Zero Harm requirements while taking care of personal health and safety and that of others. Undertake Electrical Engineering activities in accordance with statutory requirements, and policies including Zero Harm, Quality, Engineering, and Design Management policies. Undertake continuous professional development in Electrical Engineering so that up-to-date knowledge and skills can be applied to the role. Embed Engineering excellence and operational experience in Electrical Engineering activities. Contribute as a team member to building and strengthening a skilled, high performing, and motivated electrical capability, with an open and positive working environment, and a culture of excellence, collaboration and trust. Provide electrical engineering support to the business during periods of high risk and urgency. Provide electrical technical direction and support to establish a temporary or permanent corrective action plan, and support root cause analysis and solution development when required. Ensure all electrical assessments, advice and recommendations are fully documented in accordance with all internal procedures. Support technical and commercial due diligence (whether internal or external) activities. Responsible for ensuring electrical risks are identified, captured, recorded and addressed appropriately, providing technical expertise and guidance to ensure risk level is ALARP. Ensure that electrical lifetime costs are optimised during the origination, design, and construction of assets. Ensure decommissioning and/or end of life of electrical infrastructure is considered during the design and construction phases of projects. Actively engage in internal lead teams and committees and build a strong support network with the wider business. Represent the business in external meetings, industry bodies, tradeshows and conventions. Develop the Electrical Engineering designs for DCO projects from concept all the way through to delivery. Lead on the DCO Substation package through development, concept design, tender, technical offer review, contractor design review and delivery. Manage external consultants and be accountable for the delivery of the external power system and electrical design studies. Support the procurement strategy for the DCO projects including scope and schedule definition, equipment qualification, and technical due diligence. Knowledge and experience A minimum of 5 years of experience in Electrical Engineering or a related Engineering discipline and preferably a minimum of 12 months experience in the renewables Industry. A bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or similar, with a propensity for advancement in further education. Professional accreditation or working towards professional accreditation would be advantageous. A strong background in substation and transmission plant and apparatus design at transmission voltage levels (132 – 400kV). Previous experience working with transmission system operators would be desirable. Experience in conducting technical and commercial negotiations with EPC contractors / EBOP Contractors, Consultants, etc. Experience of mentoring technical staff as well as mentoring non-technical staff. Experience of managing contractors and consultants. Experience in the preparation of technical specifications and other technical documents. Experience in the preparation of preliminary electrical designs (single line diagrams, schematics, general arrangement drawings, etc.). Experience of tender / bid evaluation. A basic understanding of wind turbines, PV Solar, and BESS, and their control. A good working knowledge of power system studies and the design processes for electrical systems. Functional / technical skills Ability to identify critical technical issues and use good judgement and decision making. Excellent verbal / written communication skills. Strong report writing skills. Be computer literate in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Project; and adaptable to other programmes. Health & Safety Promote safety culture and compliance with the business’ Zero Harm principles. Experienced in design of safe EHV systems incorporating interlocking, substation operational procedures, and ALARP principles. Knowledge of CDM 2015 and Principal Designer responsibilities for substation design. Expertise in HV safety rules for transmission-level substations (132kV to 400kV). Strong understanding of Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 and BS 7671. Knowledge of OHSAS 18001, ISO 9001, and ISO 14001 standards would be beneficial. Experience conducting design risk assessments and managing electrical risks effectively. NEBOSH/IOSH certification desirable for health and safety leadership. Support emergency response planning and risk mitigation strategies.

This role is to report to the O&M Manager.
