Senior Research and Development Engineer
 
Location: Hartlepool/Hybrid (Minimum 3 days per week in Hartlepool)
 
 
Scope
  • To develop and transfer to the rest of the Client’s new power cable products and technology for the renewable energy industry.
  • A senior role within the Technology team, closely supporting the Principal Engineers on key technology research and development encompassing cables, joints, accessories, and associated technology. The Senior Engineer takes technical ownership of R&D projects, manages, and delivers them on schedule with the support of Research & Development Engineers as well as Graduates and Apprentices on rotation through line management responsibility.
  • This role is primarily focused on technology and testing research and development activity; however, the role is also required to work towards Product Qualifications.
 
Responsibilities
  • Research and develop new technologies and engage with new and current suppliers as part of specifically allocated R&D projects to meet our Client’s identified product requirements as well as meeting any customer requirements and relevant international standards.
  • Project Management of R&D projects and assist in the management of Product Qualification Projects, where appropriate, including budgets, schedules, and project management of both external and inhouse functions (such as procurement, scheduling, manufacturing, termination, and test) to ensure that quality, cost control and project schedules are maintained.
  • Produce documents such as Design Specifications, Drawings, Technical Reports, Test Procedures, Purchasing Specifications and Qualification/Type Test Specifications and reports, whilst ensuring a high level of accuracy is present in all documents. Checking and approval of such documents, including Visual ERP documents, subject to competence, is also expected as part of the daily activities.
  • Engage with suppliers, customers and third parties, using NDAs as applicable, in bringing appropriate new technology, new materials and new suppliers, whilst maximising our Client’s protection of IPR.
  • Provide technical support for the Marketing, Sales, Tendering, Supply Chain, Design and Production departments.
  • Responsible for employee relations in conjunction with HR and the Principal Engineer to ensure overall team performance and the implementation of company initiatives including the supporting of PDP’s and training needs.
  • Represent our Client at external technical events to continually strive to be regarded as a thought leader within the industry.
  • Transfer new product developments, once qualified, into the wider business workflows, including but not limited to: Engineering, Production, Quality, Sales and Purchasing departments.
  • Input to the Design Manuals, defining the rules and process by which projects are engineered.
In addition to the above responsibilities, the role holder is required to undertake such duties and responsibilities as may reasonably be required from time to time. To comply with all Health and Safety, Quality and Environmental standards and procedures
established by the Client’s policies and in accordance with the requirements of relevant legislation and any regulatory bodies always. To have read, understood and comply with the company Health and Safety manual, policies, and procedures and to implement these, always, to ensure both your own safety and the safety of those who may be affected by your actions or omissions.

Awareness of the importance of IPR and Confidentiality agreements is an important element of making good decisions in this role.

  • Working with Others – In this role you will be working with a wide range of other parties: external parties, such as test houses and suppliers, as well as internal parties such as sales, proposals, purchasing, scheduling, engineering production and test. Hence the ability to communicate openly and well is important, including the ability to involve others effectively in creative problem solving.
  • Another important competency is sufficient assertiveness to ensure that projects receive the appropriate level of focus within our Client’s matrix structure.
  • Function and Technical – For the technical side of the role, attention to detail is important as is aptitude with mathematical software. The courage and self-confidence to be able to challenge existing practices where required and be able to address issues from first principles are also sought in this role.
 
Knowledge, Skills, Experience, Qualifications
 
Essential
  • Degree qualified in an Engineering subject
  • Ability to address technical issues from first principles
  • Competent at report writing in English
  • Competent user of engineering software such as CAD packages
 
Desirable
  • Postgraduate degree in an Engineering subject
  • Chartered Engineer or equivalent
  • Specialist knowledge and skills in one or more of the following areas: Cable jointing and terminations; Cable testing (HV and/or mechanical); Offshore installation and operations
