The Construction Manager will form part of a delivery team as the projects move from the development phase to delivery/construction phase and will be involved in procurement and supply chain engagement, site investigation and surveys, access works and early contractor engagement. The role will also be responsible for construction phase programmes, working closely with the project consenting teams to provide expert advice on constructability and windfarm delivery.

During the construction of projects, the Construction Manager will continue to work closely with Tier 1 Contractors to ensure all works are delivered safely to programme, cost and quality requirements.

The role will require close collaboration with project consenting, land management and external affairs colleagues and will be supported by in-house access/transport, engineering. The role location is flexible, requiring time in our clients office in central Cardiff, and frequent travel to the portfolio sites across Wales and to supply chain partner locations required from time to time.

This senior role requires an experienced and qualified civil/construction engineer or manager who has been through the complete project lifecycle in a management or leadership position and can bring a wealth of relevant experience to bear on challenging projects. Our client need to add a Construction Manager who has “been there and done it” to support their ambitious plans for a 2GW+ Wind Farm Construction programme in Wales.
Main Responsibilities
  • Lead on construction matters for assigned projects.
  • Management of civil, ground and access engineering consultants and contractors, and input to associated procurement processes.
  • Opine on engineering and design issues including constructability.
  • Management of construction contract interfaces, including Grid Contractors (in close cooperation with the Grid and Engineering team).
  • Input to management meetings on construction and design matters.
  • Review of proposals, reports and designs for all project construction and engineering matters.
  • Undertake site inspections, inspect works and respond to queries, in conjunction with the Engineering Team.
  • Input to all construction phase programmes, including review of contractor submissions.
  • Be the focus for construction and site safety for the team.
  • Management of the construction programme, ensuring completion of construction, safely and on time.
  • Ensure appropriate site quality, safety and environmental management practices are in place.
  • Ensure appropriate approved Contractor’s management plans in place.
  • Reporting / Financial management / Forecasts (cost and time) for construction contracts
  • Risk management (manage and advise on adequacy of contingency and risks identified)

Knowledge & Skills
  • Strong communication skills both in-person and written that enable efficient and clear delivery to the wide range of project stakeholders - contractors, external parties (including the public), Board members and the wider team.
  • Ability to recognise and plan for risk in projects, working with all appointed parties to reach efficient solutions.
  • Practical application of NEC4 and FIDIC forms of contract in the development and delivery phases of wind farm and other renewable projects.
  • A proactive self-starter who can be trusted to work with remote colleagues and external teams efficiently and professionally at a senior level but who is also prepared to get into the roots of a problem and take ownership of issues on behalf of the project.

Experience & Qualifications
  • Extensive onshore wind farm project delivery experience with a strong technical capability and a keen interest in how the renewable energy sector needs to evolve to support a low carbon future.
  • Demonstrated senior level construction leadership ability on £20M+ D&C projects (in particular those with a large civils and electrical scope of work similar to an onshore windfarm), including the ability to build and maintain strong professional working relationships with contractual counterparties.
  • Experience at management level of all phases of the project lifecycle, preferably in the energy sector although other major infrastructure sectors can also be considered.
  • Experience of managing consultants and contractors through major value commissions and controlling internal and external interfaces of behalf of a client organisation.
  • Demonstrate a high degree of technical competency in the renewable project elements combined with practical experience of construction and commissioning.
